USSR's old domain name attracts cybercriminals

MOSCOW (AP) ? The Soviet Union disappeared from the map more than two decades ago. But online an 'e-vil empire' is thriving.

Security experts say the .su Internet suffix assigned to the USSR in 1990 has turned into a haven for hackers who've flocked to the defunct superpower's domain space to send spam and steal money.

Capitalist concerns, rather than Communist nostalgia, explain the move.

"I don't think that this is really a political thing," Oren David, a manager at security firm RSA's anti-fraud unit, said in a recent telephone interview. David noted that other obscure areas of the Internet, such as the .tk domain associated with the South Pacific territory of Tokelau, have been used by opportunistic hackers.

"It's all about business," he said.

David and others say scammers began to move to .su after the administrators of Russia's .ru space toughened their rules back in late 2011.

Group-IB, which runs one of Russia's two official Internet watchdogs, says that the number of malicious websites hosted across the Soviet Union's old domain doubled in 2011 and doubled again in 2012, surpassing even the vast number of renegade sites on .ru and its newer Cyrillic-language counterpart.

The Soviet domain has "lots of problems," Group-IB's Andrei Komarov said in a phone interview. "In my opinion more than half of cybercriminals in Russia and former USSR use it."

The most notorious site was Exposed.su, which purportedly published credit records belonging to President Barack Obama's wife, Michelle, Republican presidential challengers Mitt Romney and Donald Trump, and celebrities including Britney Spears, Jay Z, Beyonce and Tiger Woods. The site is now defunct.

Other Soviet sites are used to control botnets ? the name given to the networks of hijacked computers used by criminals to empty bank accounts, crank out spam, or launch attacks against rival websites.

Internet hosting companies generally eliminate such sites as soon as they're identified. But Swiss security researcher Roman Huessy, whose abuse.ch blog tracks botnet control sites, said hackers based in Soviet cyberspace can operate with impunity for months at a time.

Asked for examples, he rattled off a series of sites actively involved in ransacking bank accounts or holding hard drives hostage in return for ransom ? brazenly working in the online equivalent of broad daylight.

"I can continue posting this list for ages," he said via Skype.

The history of .su goes back to the early days of the Internet, when its architects were creating the universe of country code suffixes meant to mark out a website's nationality. Each code ? like .fr for France or .ca for Canada ? was meant to correspond to a country.

Some Cold War-era domain names ? such as .yu for Yugoslavia or .dd for East Germany ? evaporated after the countries behind them disappeared. But the .su domain survived the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991 and the creation of a .ru domain in 1994, resisting repeated attempts to wipe it from the Web because, unlike other defunct domains, those behind .su refused to pull the plug ? on both commercial and patriotic grounds.

With more than 120,000 domains currently registered, mothballing .su now would be a messy operation.

"It's like blocking .com or .org," said Komarov. "Lots of legitimate domains are registered there."

Among them are stalin.su, which eulogizes the Soviet dictator and the English-language chronicle.su, an absurdist parody site.

But experts say many are fraudulent, and even the organization behind .su accepts it has a problem on its hands.

"We realize it's a threat for our image," said Sergei Ovcharenko, whose Moscow-based nonprofit Foundation for Internet Development took responsibility for .su in 2007.

Ovcharenko insisted that only a small number of .su sites are malicious, although he acknowledged that criminal sites can stay online for extremely long periods of time. He said his hands were tied by weak Russian legislation and outdated terms of service. But he promised that stricter rules are on their way after months of legal leg work.

"We are almost there," he said. "This summer, we'll be rolling out our new policy."

Meanwhile .su has become an increasingly notorious corner of the Internet, an online echo of the evil empire moniker assigned to the Soviet Union by U.S. President Ronald Reagan 30 years ago.

David, the RSA manager, said the emergence of a Communist relic as a 21st century security threat was a bizarre blast from the past.

"I thought that the Berlin Wall and my grandma's borscht are the only remnants of the Soviet Union," he said. "I was wrong."

Amazon Reportedly Sets June 7 Launch For Kindle Devices In China

After more than a year of speculation and delays, Amazon Kindle e-readers and tablets will reportedly be available for sale in China on June 7. E-readers like the Paperwhite and Kindle Fire tablets will be sold on Amazon China’s Web site, as well as Tesco stores operated by retail conglomerate Suning. Amazon Kindle kiosks have already been spotted in a Beijing Tesco, Sina Tech reports (link via Google Translate). The price of the Kindle Paperwhite Wi-Fi has reportedly been set at 849 RMB (about $138), while the Kindle Fire HD will sell for about 1,400 to 1,500 RMB ($228 to $244). Amazon has gradually rolled out its Kindle platform in China. Documentation appeared late last year showing that the Kindle had begun to support simplified Chinese characters. In December, Amazon’s China?site added a Kindle store category and made Kindle app downloads available. The company also launched its Chinese-language Web site for developers earlier this month, promising that they would soon have access to customers in 200 countries. Despite its slow and steady approach, Amazon has faced several obstacles, including regulatory challenges for its e-book business from the General Administration of Press and Publication, China’s state censorship organization. Amazon China does not have a license to publish e-books and instead partnered with domestic e-publisher ChineseAll.com to launch Kindle book downloads last December. In response, the General Administration of Press and Publication launched an investigation into the partnership last December, stating that borrowing a license is against the law. It’s also unclear if Amazon will be able to reap any profit from tapping into the world’s second-largest market in the e-reader industry. In the U.S., Amazon sells its hardware at cost, relying instead on sales of books, apps and movies for profit. In China, however, Amazon not only has to deal with scrutiny, but also with domestic competitors, including media conglomerate Hanvon, Dangdang and Shanda, who have already gained a solid foothold on the e-publishing market, as well as pirated versions of popular titles. The wide availability of e-books, as well as cheap Android tablets, may mean Amazon will have to make significant adjustments to its revenue model in China.

China is building an entire city in the forests near the Belarusian capital Minsk to create a manufacturing springboard between the European Union and Russia.

Medium Term Treasury Bond ETF Investing 101 - May 28, 2013 ...

As far as ETFs are concerned, 2013 has been pretty much a year for the short term segment so far. Besides the huge surge in interest for Japan ETFs, short term bond ETFs were among the hottest picks for investors (read DXJ vs. DBJP: Which is the Better Hedged Japan ETF?).

The space saw great inflows in their asset bases with funds like Vanguard Short Term Bond ETF (BSV), iShares Barclays 1-3 Year Credit Bond ETF (CSJ) and iShares Barclays Short Treasury Bond ETF (SHV) topping the creation list in the short term bond ETF space (see Are Short Term Bond ETFs the New Safe Haven?).

Nevertheless, the recent surge in the asset inflow of medium term U.S Treasury bond ETFs point towards the fact that the safety of U.S treasuries has not entirely been discarded by investors, even amidst the overall optimism in the equity markets.

Investment case for the Intermediate Term Treasury Bond ETFs

These ETFs predominantly target the intermediate part of the treasury yield curve and carry moderate levels of interest rate risk. In fact, these can be considered to be the sweet spots across the yield curve which do not limit the income opportunity as opposed to short term bond funds. At the same time, the medium term bonds limit the interest rate risks as opposed to longer dated Treasury bond ETFs.

In fact, considering the present circumstances, the intermediate term Treasury bond ETFs may have the most lucrative investment opportunity compared to the long and short dated counterparts.

The short term interest rates are almost nearing zero percentin yields resulting in negative real returns. At the same time, concerns are rising over a possible interest rate increase for the longer dated Treasury bonds, which would cause big losses in these products (see Time to Buy Floating Rate ETFs?).

If one takes the above scenarios together, investors primarily need two things from their bond ETFs? adecent payout ofincome coupled with relative insulation from rising interest rates. And nothing fits the bill like the intermediate term Treasury bond ETFs.

ETF Choices to Target Intermediate Treasury Bonds

Probably two of the most popular and widely traded funds from the medium term bond ETF space are the iShares Barclays 3-7 Year Treasury Bond ETF (IEI) and the iShares Barclays 7-10 Year Treasury Bond ETF (IEF). The former has an asset base of around $3.8 billion while the latter has managed to amass $4.7 billion in total assets.

Both these iShares ETFs charge investors 15 basis points in fees and expenses and have high average daily volumes. However, IEF tracks the performance of Treasury bonds which are further away in terms of residual maturity compared to IEI.

This fact is highlighted by the average maturity of the two ETFs, with IEI having a weighted average maturity of 4.62 years compared to IEF?s 8.36 years.

Also, IEF lies higher in the hierarchy of risk return tradeoff as its average duration of 7.53 years is one of the highest in the intermediate term Treasury Bond ETF space. In comparison, IEI has an average duration of 4.41 years suggesting it has a much lower level of duration risk (see Time to Buy The Hedged European ETF?).

Launched in May of 2007, the SPDR Barclays Intermediate Term Treasury ETF (ITE) is another choice from the intermediate term Treasury bond ETF space. It has a fairly large window of maturity from which it can pick treasury bonds for its portfolio. It targets Treasuries having a residual maturity between 1 and 10 years.

It has an asset base of $169.69 million and trades in fairly large quantities. Not surprisingly, it sports a paltry dividend yield of 1.53%.

It holds around 194 securities in its portfolio and has an average maturity of 3.88 years. The ETF also has moderate levels of interest rate risk as measured by its average duration of 3.68 years.

The Vanguard Intermediate Term Government Bond ETF (VGIT) is another option available to the investors to gain exposure in the medium term treasury bond ETF space. Still investors should note that it does not have a large asset base and more shares are traded in most of the fund?s counterparts.

Nevertheless, it targets bonds having a residual maturity between 5 to 10 years; however, most of the bonds in its portfolio are comprised of the shorter end of this maturity spectrum.

This fact is highlighted by the fact that it has a weighted average of 5.4 years to maturity and a moderate level of interest rate sensitivity as measured by an average duration of 5.1 years (read ECB Rate Cut: How Did It Impact Euro ETFs?).

VGIT has an asset base of approximately $186.13 million and charges investors 12 basis points in fees and expenses.

For investors who are willing to welcome some extra risk in their portfolio the ProShares Ultra 7-10 Year Treasury Bond ETF (UST) might come in handy. The ETF has been an extremely popular choice among investors lately as the fund has seen abnormally high inflows in its asset base lately.

The ETF is a 2X leveraged version of IEF and tracks twice the daily performance of the Barclays Capital U.S. 7-10 Year Treasury Index. Since it involves leverage and daily rebalancing, the ETF charges a hefty premium in the form of expense ratio which stands at 95 basis points.

However, investors should note that the ETF might not prove to be a good candidate for a buy and hold strategy since the rebalancing is done on a daily basis. Therefore, the actual results may vary from the targeted 200% of the Index returns if held for more than one day.

However, with the backdrop of falling interest rates and an ultra loose interest rate policy by the Federal Reserve, the leveraged ETF, UST, has completely crushed its non leveraged counterparts in terms of cumulative performance.

The following chart depicts the performance of all the non leveraged ETFs discussed in the article from the medium term ETF space. The time horizon in consideration is 3 years.

Bottom Line

As we can see, all of the funds have performed in a relatively tight range over the past few years. The biggest winner has easily been IEF though, as this product has crushed its competitors.

A large part of this outperformance is due to IEF?s position on the yield curve when compared to other treasury bond ETFs in the medium segment of the curve. And in a scenario of falling interest rates, the returns for this are bound to be higher for these higher duration securities rather than those that have comparatively shorter durations (see Cambria Launches Shareholder Yield ETF (SYLD)).

Nevertheless, it is important to consider that all Treasury ETFs have had an extremely impressive run thus far, therefore the possibility of a top in these ETFs cannot be ruled out.

This is especially true considering a possible QE exit by the Fed and interest rates creeping upwards, especially for the longer dated bonds. Investors should therefore exercise caution before investing in these products, especially higher duration ones.

Until that time though, products in the middle portion of the curve, such as those highlighted above, could present themselves as solid options for investors seeking to make a low risk investment that still has a bit of yield in today?s market environment.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is flying home to Chicago to give a boost to Democrats hoping to take back the House in 2014.

Obama will headline a fundraiser Wednesday for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee at the home of two longtime supporters. Tickets start at $10,000 per person and go up to $32,400 per couple.

Obama will also be joined by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel at a reception costing $1,000 per person.

Democrats need to gain 17 seats to gain the majority.

First lady Michelle Obama is also raising Democratic cash at two New York fundraisers for the Democratic National Committee, including the DNC's annual lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender gala featuring NBA veteran Jason Collins.

Oil falls below $94 a barrel

BANGKOK (AP) ? The price of oil fell Monday as traders concerned about global energy demand took profits ahead of economic data from China and the United States.

Benchmark oil for July delivery was down 59 cents to $93.66 per barrel at late afternoon Bangkok time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 10 cents to $94.15 a barrel on Friday.

Analysts said traders took profits before May unemployment data is released Tuesday in Washington, which should help clarify the state of the recovery in the world's biggest economy.

"We're starting to build confidence in the economic data, but that's not going to stop anyone from taking money off the table ahead of a long weekend," Carl Larry of Oil Outlooks and Opinions said in a market commentary, referring to the Memorial Day holiday in the U.S. on Monday.

The global economic picture was clouded last week by a private survey showing weak Chinese manufacturing. That raised questions about the strength of oil demand in the world's No. 2 economy.

Qinwei Wang, an economist with Capital Economics, said in a market commentary that recent Chinese indicators suggest that "general economic conditions remain downbeat." The more closely watched official manufacturing survey is due Saturday, Wang said.

Brent crude, a benchmark for many international oil varieties, fell 36 cents to $102.22 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London.

In other energy futures trading on Nymex:

? Wholesale gasoline rose 0.1 cent to $2.819 a gallon.

? Heating oil fell 1 cent to $2.846 a gallon.

? Natural gas fell 2.4 cents to $4.237 per 1,000 cubic feet.

University of Akron professor uses pop culture as a framework to explore philosophy in new book

"A planet where apes evolved from men? There's got to be an answer," quips George Taylor, the character played by Charlton Heston in the 1968 sci-fi classic, "Planet of the Apes." That is just one of many questions raised by "Planet of the Apes" a film and franchise rife with philosophical issues spanning race, religion, time travel, animal rights, science and sanity.

John Huss, an associate professor of philosophy at The University of Akron who says he was "blown away" by the original "Planet of the Apes" more than 30 years ago, has edited and compiled a collection of essays in a new book, "Planet of the Apes and Philosophy: Great Apes Think Alike."

Huss says he focused on enlisting "the best and most appropriate authors for every single topic in the book," first-rate philosophers with genuine interest in the "Planet of the Apes" films.

While written by philosophers, the book is addressed to fans of the films, and has already caught the attention of those intimately connected with the franchise. The book has received advance praise from Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, screenwriters of 2011's "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" and the upcoming "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" (expected in 2014), who say, "This book is a must, not only for 'Planet of the Apes' fans, but for anyone interested in what it means to be a primate. Fascinating and thought-provoking."

Dale Jamieson, author of "Ethics and the Environment" (2008), adds, "We can't know what Aristotle, Descartes, Spinoza or Hume would have made of the rising of the apes, but we do have 'Planet of the Apes and Philosophy' not only a terrific read but highly relevant to urgent issues of our times."

"It's fairly ambitious for books in the pop culture and philosophy genre," Huss says. "It tackles a range of topics: the future of our planet, our ethical obligations to other species, animal intelligence and consciousness, the status of acting in an era of digitized characters, the paradoxes of time travel it is equally oriented toward human and animal concerns. After all, humans are but one of the Great Apes."

"Planet of the Apes and Philosophy: Great Apes Think Alike" will be available on Amazon.com and in bookstores May 28.

Huss, who has contributed to and edited previous books in the "Popular Culture and Philosophy" series including "Monty Python and Philosophy: Nudge Nudge, Think Think" (2006), "Johnny Cash and Philosophy: The Burning Ring of Truth" (2008), and "The Rolling Stones and Philosophy: It's Just a Thought Away" (2011) says that combining pop culture and philosophy is a good way to initiate dialogue about the "big questions, like, 'Who are we, and where are we headed?'"

His next plan?

"Neil Young and philosophy," he said. "He's got a lot of provocative material to use."

Who knows, perhaps a "heart of gold" would fall somewhere on Aristotle's list of virtues.

Huss says he focused on enlisting "the best and most appropriate authors for every single topic in the book," first-rate philosophers with genuine interest in the "Planet of the Apes" films.

"Planet of the Apes and Philosophy: Great Apes Think Alike" will be available on Amazon.com and in bookstores May 28.

His next plan?

"Neil Young and philosophy," he said. "He's got a lot of provocative material to use."

Who knows, perhaps a "heart of gold" would fall somewhere on Aristotle's list of virtues.

Despite the ladles of praise heaped upon LG's Nexus 4, the company's European VP doesn't believe we'll see the company build the next iteration in the range. During a chat with AllAboutPhones, Kim Wong said that the Nexus 4's success means that the company "does not need such a marketing success again" -- disagreeing with the Korea Times, which said just the opposite at the start of the month. Wong added that whilst the company is still friendly with Google, it won't be entering the stock Android game any time soon, thanks to a desire to bring LG's own skin-friendly experience to users.

10 fans injured when TV cable falls on race track

CONCORD, N.C. (AP) ? Charlotte Motor Speedway said 10 fans were injured Sunday at the Coca-Cola 600 and three of them were taken to the hospital after a nylon rope supporting a Fox Sports overhead television camera fell from the grandstands and landed on the track surface.

According to CMS spokeswoman Danielle Frye the three people taken to the hospital had "minor injuries that are not life threatening." She said seven people were treated with "minor cuts and scrapes" on site and released.

Fox Sports released a statement Sunday night saying it hasn't determined the cause of the accident and it is suspending use of the camera system indefinitely.

"Our immediate concern is with the injured fans," Fox said in the statement.

Fox said the camera system consists of three ropes ? a drive rope that moves the camera back and forth, and two guide ropes on either side. Fox said it was the drive rope that failed near the first-turn connection and fell to the track.

"The camera itself did not come down because guide ropes acted as designed," Fox said in the statement. "A full investigation is planned, and use of the camera is suspended indefinitely."

Fox said it has used the camera system at the Daytona 500, at last week's NASCAR Sprint All-Star race and other major sporting events.

"We certainly regret that the system failure affected tonight's event, we apologize to the racers whose cars were damaged, and our immediate concern is for the race fans," Fox said in the statement. "We also offer a sincere thank you to the staff at CMS for attending to the injuries and keeping us informed on this developing situation."

The incident occurred on lap 121 of the 400-lap NASCAR Sprint Cup race.

The race was delayed for 27 minutes while crews repaired damage to their cars.

Kyle Busch, going for a sweep at Charlotte Motor Speedway after winning the Nationwide and Truck series races, was leading when he incurred damage to the right front wheel well of his No. 18 Toyota.

Marcos Ambrose and Mark Martin also reported damage.

No drivers were injured.

The cars were initially brought along pit row as workers cleared the ropes from the track.

NASCAR first threw a caution flag before two red flags came out. It eventually allowed the cars to come into the pits, giving crews 15 minutes to work on their cars.

During the break, Busch's crew frantically worked to repair a number of problems to the right front wheel well. After completing repairs to the car, the crew slapped high-fives after getting the car back on the track.

Busch remained competitive and was running in the top five at the midpoint of the race. But his night ended in frustration when his engine blew up on lap 253.

"I commend NASCAR for taking the initiative and letting us repair our damaged cars from the issue we had," Busch said.

Busch said he never saw the nylon rope.

"I just heard a big thunk on the right-front side tire and thought the right-front tire blew out," Busch said. "That's how hard it felt... It did have an effect slowing my car down and I could feel it like, 'Whoa, that's weird.' I don't know that anybody has ever seen that. Maybe now we can get rid of that thing."

He has never won a Sprint Cup race at Charlotte Motor Speedway and has suffered his share of bad luck at the track.

Prior to the restart, Ambrose was made to run five laps on his own to make up for the laps missed when he pulled into pit row and the rest of the field was under caution.

In May of 2000, more than 100 fans were injured outside of the CMS when an 80-foot section of the walkway fell an estimated 25 feet onto a highway below. Fans were crossing the bridge to a parking lot following the completion of the NASCAR All-Star race.

UK: 2 men charged after Pakistan plane diverted

LONDON (AP) ? British authorities have charged two men with endangering an aircraft after a plane carrying more than 300 people from Pakistan to Britain was diverted mid-flight.

Essex Police said Sunday that 30-year-old taxi driver Tayyab Subhani and 41-year-old restaurant worker Mohammed Safdar will appear in court on Monday.

Both men, from Lancashire in northwestern England, remain in custody.

A Typhoon fighter jet was scrambled on Friday to divert the Pakistan International Airlines plane traveling from Lahore, Pakistan, to Manchester, and forced it to land at London's Stansted Airport. The Boeing 777 plane landed safely.

Details about what happened onboard are sketchy but a security official said the situation did not appear to be terror-related.

Bowie Young, Cavalleri tied in the Bahamas

PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas (AP) ? Heather Bowie Young made five straight birdies while jumping from one side of the golf course to the other. Silvia Cavalleri was hitting the ball so well Friday she was sorry the Bahamas Classic was held on only 12 holes.

The slogan for the LPGA Tour is, "See why it's different out here." Was it ever.

Bowie Young and Cavalleri were tied for the lead at 6-under 39, which by numbers alone broke the LPGA scoring record by 20 shots. Not to worry. Annika Sorenstam's 59 in Phoenix in 2002 still stands as the lowest 18-hole score in LPGA history.

"It was so bizarre," Cristie Kerr said after the longest day on the shortest course.

Severe flooding earlier in the week left much of the Ocean Club under water. The LPGA decided to use the holes that were available, and two of those holes had to be converted into par 3s because bunkers had caved in from a foot of rain that fell in a five-hour stretch Tuesday night.

The hope was to complete three rounds of 12 holes to make the inaugural Bahamas Classic official. On the LPGA Tour, 36 holes have to be completed for it to count. Even with a 12-hole, par-45 course, that was going to be a challenge because of a three-hour delay for lightning.

Twenty-seven players failed to finish the round. The day ended with Na Yeon Choi sprinting to the final hole so her group could tee off before the horn sounded to stop play because of darkness. That's not unusual. What was different was the routing. She was on the third green, and the final hole in the setup was No. 8, meaning Choi had to run around a lake, through some vegetation, behind the seventh green and across a dirt path.

If nothing else, she saw a beautiful sunset along the eighth fairway. And she finished.

The first round is to resume at 8 a.m.

Anna Nordqvist ran off three straight birdies early in her round for a 5-under 40, tied with three others. The group at 4-under 41 included Suzann Pettersen. More than one player smiled coming out of the scoring tent and mockingly celebrated their lowest round ever.

Bowie Young looked at it differently.

"I can remember trying to shoot 39 for nine holes, and that's happened this year," Bowie Young said. "I've shot well over that for nine holes."

Nordqvist fared much better than the other two players in her group ? Inbee Park and Stacy Lewis, Nos. 1 and 2 in the women's world ranking. Park failed to make a single birdie in her round of 1-over 46. Lewis was going along fine until the par-5 11th, her sixth hole. She pulled her second shot just into a bunker, leaving an awkward third shot from about 50 yards that had to clear another bunker. She clipped it clean, and it sailed over the back of the green and into the water, leading to double bogey.

Lewis birdied her next two holes and had a 1-under 44.

The LPGA Tour signed up Pure Silk and the Bahamas Tourism Ministry as title sponsors and wanted to do all it could to play golf in the first year of this event, even if that meant going to extremes of playing a 12-hole course with the holes out of sequence to help with the flow.

Everyone teed off on No. 10, and then headed to the front nine.

Park was leaving the green when she stopped to make sure she knew where she was going ? a 120-yard walk across a waste area to the sixth tee. They played sixth and the seventh, and then headed over to the fourth hole. And that's when it got really crowded.

At one point, there were nine players in a 50-yard radius.

Morgan Pressel was in the second group, which was coming off the third green and headed to the eighth tee.

"We're just going to play through," Jacqui Concolino said with a smile to Park, Lewis and Nordqvist. They were walking off the seventh green and headed to No. 4. Juli Inkster, Catriona Matthew and Candie Kung were approaching the seventh green. There was a lot of traffic.

The Lewis trio got into carts, because the tee on par-4 fourth hole was moved to about 130 yards of the green. There was standing water in the fairways ? it looked more like small ponds ? though the problem was a large bunker right of the green that was unplayable. Tour officials couldn't afford players going into the bunker, and they made the muddy mess easier to avoid by making it a short par 3.

That's what surprised the players the most. Most of them were on board with a 12-hole course ? remember, Prestwick was only 12 holes when the British Open was played on the links 15 times back in the day ? in an effort to have a tournament. They just didn't realize there would be five par 3s. It felt like an executive course.

Laura Davies had a 2-under 43. She was all smiles on her way to the golf course, and full of a few quips.

"This should be a lot of fun," Davies said. "I just hope I don't get disqualified if I can't find my way to the next tee. I'll just walk slow and follow everybody else."

Kerr finally got going with two birdies on her last three holes for a 1-under 44. She arrived at the course at 11:30 a.m., unaware there was a storm delay, and spent five hours at the course before she finally teed off. The hardest part of her day was the scorecard.

There wasn't time to make new scorecards to reflect the routing of the holes ? 10, 6, 7, 4, 5, 11, 12, 13, 14, 2, 3, 8 ? so she was filling in numbers that looked out of place.

"I had to check it six times," Kerr said. "You're putting a 2 or a 3 where it shows a par 5 and a 5 where it shows a par 3. But we all got it right. They're doing the best we can with what we have. Everyone is here. Everyone wants to play."

LPGA Tour Commissioner Mike Whan is trying to avoid a Monday finish because several players have U.S. Women's Open qualifying early next week.

Sexual assault is a 'scourge' on U.S. military, Hagel says

(Reuters) - Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel called sexual assault a "scourge" on Saturday as he addressed graduates of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, where a sergeant stands accused of videotaping female cadets in the showers.

"Sexual harassment and sexual assault in the military are a profound betrayal - a profound betrayal - of sacred oaths and sacred trusts," Hagel said. "This scourge must be stamped out."

His comments came a day after President Barack Obama delivered a similar message to graduates at the U.S. Naval Academy, saying sexual assault threatened to erode trust and discipline in America's armed forces.

The Pentagon is reeling from a series of sex-related scandals in recent weeks, including cases in which military advocates for victims of sexual assault were themselves accused of sex crimes.

A study released by the Defense Department two weeks ago estimated that reports of unwanted sexual contact in the military, from groping to rape, rose 37 percent in 2012, to about 26,000 cases from 19,000 the previous year.

At West Point in New York state, Sergeant First Class Michael McClendon was charged last week with four counts, including indecent acts, dereliction of duty and cruelty, the Army said.

McClendon had served as a tactical non-commissioned officer at the academy since 2009, a job that put him in charge of mentoring and training a company of about 121 cadets.

The incidents have embarrassed the U.S. military and prompted members of Congress to introduce legislation designed to toughen up the Pentagon's handling of sex crimes.

Hagel, in his address, noted that budget cuts were impacting military readiness and morale. But he cited sexual assault and sexual harassment among other, growing threats to America's all-volunteer force.

"You will need to not just deal with these debilitating, insidious and destructive forces but rather you must be the generation of leaders that stop it," he said.

The world's favorite fruit only better-tasting and longer-lasting

Tomatoes, said to be the world's most popular fruit, can be made both better-tasting and longer-lasting thanks to UK research with purple GM varieties.

"Working with GM tomatoes that are different to normal fruit only by the addition of a specific compound, allows us to pinpoint exactly how to breed in valuable traits," said Professor Cathie Martin from the John Innes Centre.

The research could also lead to GM varieties with better flavour, health and shelf life characteristics because even higher levels of the compounds can be achieved.

In research to be published in Current Biology, Martin and colleagues studied tomatoes enriched in anthocyanin, a natural pigment that confers high antioxidant capacity. The purple GM tomatoes have already been found to prolong the lives of cancer-prone mice and in the latest findings they also more double the normal shelf life of tomatoes from an average of 21 days to 48 days.

"Post-harvest losses due to rotting are such a serious problem for growers and supermarkets that even an increased shelf life of one day would make an enormous difference to them," said Yang Zhang, lead author from the John Innes Centre.

One way to improve shelf life is to pick tomatoes early when they are still green and induce them to ripen artificially with ethylene. However, this results in loss of flavour. Another method is to grow varieties that never fully ripen, but these also never develop a full flavour.

In the current study, anthocyanins were found to slow down the over-ripening process that leads to rotting and softening, achieving a tomato with a long shelf life and full flavour. The purple tomatoes were also less susceptible to one of the most important postharvest diseases, grey mould caused by Botrytis cinerea.

Conventional tomatoes can now be screened for their antioxidant capacity. Those found to be highest in antioxidant compounds can be used as parental lines for breeding.

"Our research has identified a new target for breeders to produce tomato varieties that are fuller in flavour, and so more appealing to consumers, and more valuable commercially due to increased shelf life," said Martin.

The findings could also be applied to other soft fruit such as strawberries and raspberries.

Other varieties of JIC tomatoes high in a variety of compounds such as those found in red wine are being used by Essex company Biodeb to develop a range of skincare products.

Detection of the cosmic gamma ray horizon: Measures all the light in the universe since the Big Bang

May 24, 2013 ? How much light has been emitted by all galaxies since the cosmos began? After all, almost every photon (particle of light) from ultraviolet to far infrared wavelengths ever radiated by all galaxies that ever existed throughout cosmic history is still speeding through the Universe today. If we could carefully measure the number and energy (wavelength) of all those photons -- not only at the present time, but also back in time -- we might learn important secrets about the nature and evolution of the Universe, including how similar or different ancient galaxies were compared to the galaxies we see today.

That bath of ancient and young photons suffusing the Universe today is called the extragalactic background light (EBL). An accurate measurement of the EBL is as fundamental to cosmology as measuring the heat radiation left over from the Big Bang (the cosmic microwave background) at radio wavelengths. A new paper, called "Detection of the Cosmic ?-Ray Horizon from Multiwavelength Observations of Blazars," by Alberto Dominguez and six coauthors, just published today by the Astrophysical Journal -- based on observations spanning wavelengths from radio waves to very energetic gamma rays, obtained from several NASA spacecraft and several ground-based telescopes -- describes the best measurement yet of the evolution of the EBL over the past 5 billion years.

Directly measuring the EBL by collecting its photons with a telescope, however, poses towering technical challenges -- harder than trying to see the dim band of the Milky Way spanning the heavens at night from midtown Manhattan. Earth is inside a very bright galaxy with billions of stars and glowing gas. Indeed, Earth is inside a very bright solar system: sunlight scattered by all the dust in the plane of Earth's orbit creates the zodiacal light radiating across the optical spectrum down to long-wavelength infrared. Therefore ground-based and space-based telescopes have not succeeded in reliably measuring the EBL directly.

So, astrophysicists developed an ingenious work-around method: measuring the EBL indirectly through measuring the attenuation of -- that is, the absorption of -- very high energy gamma rays from distant blazars. Blazars are supermassive black holes in the centers of galaxies with brilliant jets directly pointed at us like a flashlight beam. Not all the high-energy gamma rays emitted by a blazar, however, make it all the way across billions of light-years to Earth; some strike a hapless EBL photon along the way. When a high-energy gamma ray photon from a blazar hits a much lower energy EBL photon, both are annihilated and produce two different particles: an electron and its antiparticle, a positron, which fly off into space and are never heard from again. Different energies of the highest-energy gamma rays are waylaid by different energies of EBL photons. Thus, measuring how much gamma rays of different energies are attenuated or weakened from blazars at different distances from Earth indirectly gives a measurement of how many EBL photons of different wavelengths exist along the line of sight from blazar to Earth over those different distances.

Observations of blazars by NASA's Fermi Gamma Ray Telescope spacecraft for the first time detected that gamma rays from distant blazars are indeed attenuated more than gamma rays from nearby blazars, a result announced on November 30, 2012, in a paper published in Science, as theoretically predicted.

Now, the big news -- announced in today's Astrophysical Journal paper -- is that the evolution of the EBL over the past 5 billion years has been measured for the first time. That's because looking farther out into the Universe corresponds to looking back in time. Thus, the gamma ray attenuation spectrum from farther distant blazars reveals how the EBL looked at earlier eras.

This was a multistep process. First, the coauthors compared the Fermi findings to intensity of X-rays from the same blazars measured by X-ray satellites Chandra, Swift, Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer, and XMM/Newton and lower-energy radiation measured by other spacecraft and ground-based observatories. From these measurements, Dominguez et al. were able to calculate the blazars' original emitted, unattenuated gamma-ray brightnesses at different energies.

The coauthors then compared those calculations of unattenuated gamma-ray flux at different energies with direct measurements from special ground-based telescopes of the actual gamma-ray flux received at Earth from those same blazars. When a high-energy gamma ray from a blazar strikes air molecules in the upper regions of Earth's atmosphere, it produces a cascade of charged subatomic particles. This cascade of particles travels faster than the speed of light in air (which is slower than the speed of light in a vacuum). This causes a visual analogue to a "sonic boom": bursts of a special light called ?erenkov radiation. This ?erenkov radiation was detected by imaging atmospheric ?erenkov telescopes (IACTs), such as HESS (High Energy Stereoscopic System) in Namibia, MAGIC (Major Atmospheric Gamma Imaging ?erenkov) in the Canary Islands, and VERITAS (Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array Systems) in Arizona.

Comparing the calculations of the unattenuated gamma rays to actual measurements of the attenuation of gamma rays and X-rays from blazars at different distances allowed Dominquez et al. to quantify the evolution of the EBL -- that is, to measure how the EBL changed over time as the Universe aged -- out to about 5 billion years ago (corresponding to a redshift of about z = 0.5). "Five billion years ago is the maximum distance we are able to probe with our current technology," Dom?nguez said. "Sure, there are blazars farther away, but we are not able to detect them because the high-energy gamma rays they are emitting are too attenuated by EBL when they get to us -- so weakened that our instruments are not sensitive enough to detect them." This measurement is the first statistically significant detection of the so-called "Cosmic Gamma Ray Horizon" as a function of gamma-ray energy. The Cosmic Gamma Ray Horizon is defined as the distance at which roughly one-third (or, more precisely, 1/e -- that is, 1/2.718 -- where e is the base of the natural logarithms) of the gamma rays of a particular energy have been attenuated.

This latest result confirms that the kinds of galaxies observed today are responsible for most of the EBL over all time. Moreover, it sets limits on possible contributions from many galaxies too faint to have been included in the galaxy surveys, or on possible contributions from hypothetical additional sources (such as the decay of hypothetical unknown elementary particles).
