Canada retail sales marginally up in May 2012

Canadian retail sales grew a marginal 0.3% to C$38.9bn ($38.06bn) in May from April, when sales fell a revised 0.6%, according to the data released by Statistics Canada.

Eliminating the effect of prices, retail sales volume increased 0.7% in May, almost offsetting the 0.8% drop in April.

The statistics agency said retail sales have been relatively flat since November 2011. Gains were reported in six of 11 subsectors, representing 53% of retail trade.

Food and beverage stores sales rose 1.6%, while clothing and clothing accessories stores also registered 1.6% gain in May, on monthly basis.

Higher sales at clothing stores accounted for most of the increase, which advanced for a seventh time in eight months.

Supermarkets and other grocery stores led the sales growth with a 1.8% increase, the first gain in five months.

General merchandise stores sales rose 0.8%, partially reflecting stronger sales of food, while the 'other general merchandise stores' industry advanced for a seventh consecutive month with a 0.8% rise.

Department stores sales moved up by 0.7%, while sales at sporting goods, hobby, book and music stores jumped 1.9%, partially offsetting the decrease in April.

Sales at gasoline stations were down by 1.4% in May, while sales at motor vehicle and parts dealers declined 0.4% in May.

Electronics and appliance store sales fell 0.8% in May. Sales in this subsector have been on a downward trend since the end of 2011.

Retail sales rose in six provinces in May. Alberta registering the largest monthly increase, rising 1.3% in May, a seventh monthly sales gain in ten months for this province.

Sales in Saskatchewan and Ontario increased 2% and 0.2%, while they fell 0.4% and 1.3% in Quebec and New Brunswick, respectively.

Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery

Depending on what task you ask it to perform, Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery Pro Edition does either an impressively stellar or a woefully earthbound job of bringing lost files back to life like the phoenix in its name. It has plenty of interface glitches, and it was unable to perform some tasks that OnTrack Easy Recovery Professional ($149.99, 4 stars) performed easily, but it was also able to perform some recovery tasks even more smoothly than OnTrack's offering. When you need to recover lost data, you don't need to pay for the software until after it scans your disk to test whether it can retrieve your files. If it displays your lost files in its preview screen, it can almost certainly recover them, and you can then pay for the program online to enable the program's recovery features.

Starting With Stellar
When you start up Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery, it offers a simple menu with three options, Drive Recovery, CD Recovery, and Photo Recovery. The Drive Recovery option is the most powerful, and leads to a full range of recovery methods. You first select the drive where you want to recover data, then choose among four methods: Quick Recovery, Deleted Recovery, Advanced Recovery, and Raw Recovery. The first method takes only a few seconds to scan a drive, the rest take longer. Raw Recovery can take as long as an hour to scan a very large disk. In my tests on an NTFS-formatted hard disk, the Quick Recovery method was enough to recover the deleted files I was looking for, but a disk with a scrambled directory structure would have required the Advanced or Raw methods.

As with rival products, I tested Stellar Phoenix with deleted documents on my hard disk and with a USB key that I had formatted to use as an emergency boot disk but which?before I formatted it?I had used to store backup copies of music files. In each case the program scanned the drive and displayed tree-structured lists of possibly-recoverable files.

Some Expertise Required
Like rival products, Stellar Phoenix requires you to know what you're doing when choosing files from these lists. For example, I searched for a deleted Word file named "Two Broadcasts.docx." The program listed a deleted file named "~$o Broadcasts.docx" but that wasn't the file I wanted?instead, as the file list showed me, it was a 162-byte file probably left behind by Word when I last edited the file. The file I actually wanted to recover was named "$RC9HQRN.docx," as I discovered by highlighting it in the program's list and looking at its content in the program's built-in previewer?an invaluable feature that OnTrack Easy Recovery Professional and Recuva both lack. In both those other programs, I had to save each deleted file to a disk and then open it in Word to see if it was the file I was looking for.

I had a harder time recovering MP3 files from a USB stick that I had reformatted, with the effect that none of the MP3 files were visible in Windows Explorer and apparently did not exist. OnTrack Easy Recovery Professional took ten minutes to scan my 8GB USB stick and let me recover hundreds of MP3 files to a different drive. OnTrack even displayed each file by its original name and let me open it in my default music-player software to make sure it was the file I wanted. In contrast, Stellar Phoenix took almost four hours to scan the same disk, and then listed nine music files as recoverable. Unfortunately, when I recovered those files and tried to listen to them, they all turned out to be corrupt and unplayable. Recuva also couldn't recover any music files from my USB stick, but at least it didn't claim to recover them.

Feature Light
But this doesn't mean that Stellar Phoenix might be the program you choose for recovering files from the NTFS disk in your computer. Stellar Phoenix includes a feature that lets you save recovered files to an FTP server instead of to a local disk. Unfortunately, most modern FTP servers use Secure FTP instead of the traditional FTP supported by Stellar Phoenix, so this feature may have only limited use in the real world. The program does include some other advanced features that match similar features in OnTrack Easy Recovery Professional, for example a feature that creates a full image of a drive you can try to restore data from the cloned copy?a feature that comes in handy if the drive is getting physically flaky and might not be accessible at all at a later time.

A feature that worked less well was an advanced option that is supposed to show the S.M.A.R.T. status of a disk?what the disk reports about its own health. The program reported that the S.M.A.R.T. feature was disabled on my hard disk, but in fact it isn't disabled, and other utilities showed a full S.M.A.R.T. status report.

All in all, Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery is well worth a try when you're trying to recover lost files from your desktop or laptop and you don't have any recovery software already on hand. Just download the program, let it scan your disk, and pay for it if it can display your lost file in its preview pane. You can't lose, and you can certainly gain. But if you're preparing in advance for possible data disasters, you'll probably prefer OnTrack Easy Recovery Professional.

Apple To Take Twitter Stake? Nope, Apparently Not

Well, that was fun while it lasted.

The New York Times last week got the Valley all a-titter with a report that Apple?in recent months had held talks to take a stake in Twitter.

But Bloomberg reported over the weekend that in fact Apple is NOT in active talks with Twitter. The story is attributed to ?two people familiar with the matter.? Actually, the Times story says that the two sides are not in negotiations at the moment, but went on to suggest that the talks could point to a closer relationship between the two companies.

Bloomberg asserts that the two companies held talks more than a year ago but never reached ?any agreement. The Times had reported that the companies had held talks in recent months about Apple making an investment in the hundreds of millions of dollars that would would have valued Twitter at more than $10 billion.

The two stories agree on several basic points: the two sides talked, no agreement was reached, and they aren?t currently talking about a deal. What?s irritating about the Times story is the way it was positioned, with a headline reading ?Apple Officials Said to Consider Stake in Twitter,? and then a story that says that no talks are actually taking place.?

I thought I had it under control. I've spent hours today designing a new banner and background (all by myself!). I followed the instructions on how to insert it from the website where I got my old background but they're not working. Have no fear - I always figure it out! In the meantime, the old background went *poof* when I tried to insert my new one. I had to find something to fill the void so this will have to do for now.

Although erectile dysfunction (ED) has been shown to be an early warning sign for heart disease, some physicians ? and patients ? still think of it as just as a natural part of ?old age.? But now an international team of researchers, led by physicians at The Miriam Hospital, say it?s time to expand ED symptom screening to include younger and middle-aged men.

In an article appearing in the July issue of the American Heart Journal, they encourage physicians to inquire about ED symptoms in men over the age of 30 who have cardiovascular risk factors, such as smoking, obesity or family history, and in all men with type 2 diabetes.

As many as 30 million American men suffer from ED, or the inability to maintain an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse. ED and cardiovascular disease share a common cause: narrowing of the arteries, resulting in reduced or obstructed blood flow to the organs. They also share similar risk factors, including smoking, diabetes, obesity and high blood pressure. Because the penile arteries are just a fraction smaller than the arteries supplying blood to the heart, symptoms of conditions that can narrow the arteries, such as arteriosclerosis, are likely to present first in the form of erection problems. That?s why it is also believed that the more severe the ED, the greater the risk of heart disease-related events, such as heart attack and stroke.

?Erectile dysfunction represents an important first step toward heart disease detection and reduction, yet many health care providers and patients assume it?s just a sign of old age, so it may not be something that comes up during an annual physical with a younger man who doesn?t fit the ED ?stereotype,?? says lead author Martin Miner, M.D., chief of family medicine and co-director of the Men?s Health Center at The Miriam Hospital.

?That?s why we urge physicians to discuss sexual function with the majority of their male patients ? including diabetic men of all ages and men over the age of thirty with some of the traditional heart disease risk factors, like smoking or a family history,? he adds.

Although not all men with ED are at increased risk for cardiovascular disease, Miner says it is the physician?s responsibility to make that determination based on aggressive workup and testing. If the patient is found to be at risk, the patient can then receive intensive risk factor management.

Miner and colleagues conducted a literature review of 40 studies that suggest ED is a significant predictor for cardiovascular disease in two populations: men under the age of 60 and men with diabetes. Their analysis supports several widely-held theories, including the role of ED as a significant red flag for cardiovascular disease in younger and middle-aged men.

For example, in the Mayo Clinic?s Olmsted County Study, a large, epidemiological study cohort of men from Olmsted County, Minnesota, men 40 to 49 years old with ED were twice as likely to develop coronary artery disease as those who did not have ED. However, ED had less predictive value for men 70 years and older.

Several studies, including a large analysis of more than 6,300 men enrolled in the ADVANCE (Action in Diabetes and Vascular Disease: Preterax and Diamicron Modified-Release Controlled Evaluation) trial, suggest ED is a particularly powerful indicator of cardiovascular disease in diabetic men as well, prompting researchers to call for ED symptom screening in all men with type 2 diabetes.

Miner points out early identification of men at risk for cardiovascular disease has the potential to lower health care costs and improve outcomes.

?There may be a ?window of curability? in which we can intervene early and stop the progression of heart disease,? he says. ?Also, it may be possible to someday use erectile function as a measurement to tell us if preventive interventions for heart disease are working.?

Israel eyes austerity after prosperous year

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has long boasted how Israel has avoided the fiscal fate of Spain and Greece, is poised to unveil tough austerity measures likely to hit the underprivileged.

The measures will aim to make up part of the budget deficit that has climbed to 4.0 percent of Israel's GDP -- twice that which was expected for 2012.

Taxes on cigarettes and beer have already been hiked this week, and according to media reports the government will also be raising VAT from 16 to 17 percent and introducing a 2.0 percent income tax rise in households with an annual income of at least a million shekels ($245,000, 199,300 euros).

Also expected is a combined 700-million-shekel ($171 million, 140 million euro) cut from the budgets of all ministries with the exception of defence, education and welfare.

A spokesman for Netanyahu told public radio on Thursday that the projected measures would raise the annual tax burden of each Israeli household by 1,740 shekels ($426/347 euros).

But these could only be the beginning, with Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz preparing an additional series of tax rises for 2013.

"There are no free lunches," Netanyahu said this week in an attempt to justify the austerity plan.

The government, he said, had to increase its income to fund free childcare from the age of three, to build a security fence along its southern border with Egypt to stop illegal immigrants, and to acquire "new weapons and defence systems to cope with new threats."

And earlier this week, he also suggested the defence budget could rise even further because of regional developments, notably in Syria.

Beyond the increased expenditure, tax revenues have dropped because of slow economic growth, which is 3.1 percent so far this year compared with 4.8 percent in 2011.

"Those who say that we can spend lavishly... endanger the state of Israel and could easily lead it to the brink of bankruptcy, as is the case of leading European economies," Netanyahu said.

Israeli officials also fear that the major international rating agencies, which had hitherto provided Israel with a clean bill of health, will lower their ratings.

Until now, the Jewish state had effectively escaped the sub prime crisis of 2008 and the beginning of the current crisis in the eurozone.

"To ensure stability, we must take unpopular measures," said Harel Locker, director general of Netanyahu's office.

The bitter pill the government is about to prescribe has been harshly criticised as unjust by the opposition, by the Histadrut trade union confederation and by leaders of the social protest movement which emerged in summer 2011 over the rising cost of living.

And even within the coalition, several religious and ultra-nationalist parties denounced the "anti-social" character of Netanyahu's plan for 2013, an election year.

It is the planned increase in Value Added Tax (VAT), which will affect all Israelis, that has come in for the harshest criticism.

Oded Shahar, an economic commentator for Israeli public television, called it "daylight robbery."

And Sever Plocker of the top-selling daily Yediot Aharonot said the hike was not the fault of "the European crisis" but was because of "the blindness" of the Israeli government.

One of the main critiques levelled at Netanyahu is his intention to give a huge "gift" to multinationals by halving the taxes on monies earned in Israel and which are transferred abroad, from 25 percent to 12 percent.

The Treasury justified the move, saying it would encourage the firms to repatriate their profits rather than having them "sleep" in Israeli banks -- which brings nothing to the taxman.

In a defensive statement on Thursday, Netanyahu said that "even after the steps we will take, families in Israel -- middle-class and underprivileged -- will remain with more money in their pockets" thanks to measures such as free education from the age of three, tax benefits for working families and free dental care for children.

And central bank chief Stanley Fischer was quoted as saying that Netanyahu's planned measures were "very serious progress" which displayed "very responsible leadership by the economic decision-makers."

Negotiations on a final bill are in limbo. Complicating matters, there is a procedural glitch. The Senate bill imposes a fee to pay for special visas that go to immigrant victims of domestic abuse. This runs afoul of the rule that revenue-raising measures must begin in the House. Mr. Boehner?s leadership could break the logjam ? but that, of course, would also require his Republican colleagues to drop their narrow-minded opposition to stronger protections for all victims of abuse.
Unless something changes, Republicans will bear responsibility for blocking renewal of a popular, lifesaving initiative. This seems an odd way to cultivate moderate voters, especially women, going into the fall campaign.

It has plenty going for it, from its good looks to its fine display to its comfortably ergonomic keyboard and touchpad. But in terms of performance, it falls short of comparable systems in its class, and given the amount of money users are expected to shell out for it, they could do better.

Design and Features
The Series 5 measures 12.4 by 8.6 inches (WD), with its thickness ranging from 0.58 inch at its thinnest point to 0.68 inch at its thickest. Aside from this shortcoming, however, the tiled keyboard is a breeze to type on. In addition to its quickness and responsiveness, it exhibits minimal flexing during typing, which is notable given the shallow profile. And though I would have preferred to see a Caps Lock light instead of the ephemeral notification that pops up on the display whenever you switch to and fro, this hardly constitutes a fatal flaw. The palm rest is comfortably sized for the most part, though because the generously sized touchpad takes up a third of it, the occasional stray thumb is unavoidable. Otherwise, the touchpad is comfortable and provides the right amount of tactile feedback for two-finger scrolling and pinch-zooming. The left- and right- click buttons beneath the touchpad, on the other hand, don't feel as sturdy and are noticeably clacky.

The speakers beneath the display are surprisingly loud. When playing a test track ("Crew Love" by Drake), I actually had to lower the volume by a notch because I was disturbing others in the Labs. I wouldn't categorize the sound as room-filling, nor would I suggest DJ-ing a party armed with only the Series 5, but as far as ultrabooks go, these speakers are louder than most I've encountered. Be it for movies or music, they make for a pleasant experience.

Port selection on the Series 5 is fairly lean. The right side has two USB 2.0 ports and a multiformat card reader (SD/SDHC/SDXC/MMC). Alternatively, you may ditch the cables altogether and utilize the built-in Intel Wireless Display (WiDi) technology to beam the Series 5's audio and video to an HDTV outfitted with an aftermarket adapter, like the Netgear Push2TV ($99 list).

The 128GB solid-state-drive comes preloaded with software ranging from the useful (Microsoft Office Starter 2010) to pure bloatware (Bing Bar, Skype, and the WildTangent games) to a few loose ends that fall somewhere in the middle (a 60-day trial of Norton Internet Security 2012).

Performance
The Samsung Series 5, which combines the Intel Core i5-2467M 1.6GHz "Sandy Bridge" processor and 4GB DDR3 RAM, yielded so-so results in our benchmark tests. Its PCMark 7 score of 3,330 was surpassed by the 2,822 of the Samsung Series 5 Ultra (NP530U4B-A01US) ($899.99 list, 3.5 stars) and the 3,146 of the HP Folio 13. Meanwhile, the Toshiba Portege Z830-S8302 ($1,429 list, 3.5 stars) eked past the Series 5 with 3,366, as did the Zenbook UX31A-RSL8 with an even higher 3,634. The Series 5's results in our multimedia tests were almost uniformly near the lower end of the range. It completed our Handbrake video-encoding test in 2 minutes 41 seconds, coming within striking distance of the Series 5 Ultra (2:38) but nowhere near the front-of-the-pack Portege Z830 (1:59). Similarly, its CineBench R11.5 score of 1.74 managed to nip at the heels of Series 5 Ultra and HP Folio 13 (tied with 1.93) but fell far behind the Portege Z830 (2.32). The Series 5 completed our Photoshop CS5 test in 5 minutes 26 seconds, bettering the Series 5 Ultra (5:39) and coming in only a second behind the HP Folio 13 (5:27) but, once again, falling significantly short of the Portege Z830 (4:08).

Despite being equipped with the same integrated Intel HD Graphics 3000 GPU and Sandy Bridge processor as other similar laptops, the Series 5 churned out 3DMark06 scores that paled in comparison to the others (3,234 at medium detail settings and 1,024-by-768 resolution; 1,934 at native resolution with 4x anti-aliasing), landing at the bottom near the HP Folio 13 (3,765 and 1,912, respectively) and nowhere near the Portege Z830 (4,769 and 2,623) or the Zenbook UX31A-RSL8 (4,619 and 3,417). Ultrabooks aren't designed for gaming, so it's unsurprising that, like its peers, the Series 5 failed to crack the 30fps playability barrier in our Crysis and Lost Planet 2 tests. Thus, its performance in Crysis (14fps in medium quality at 1,024-by-768 resolution; 5fps in high quality at native resolution) and Lost Planet 2 (12fps in medium quality at 1,024-by-768 resolution; 5fps in high quality at native resolution) didn't fare much worse than the class-leading Portege Z83099 (20fps in Crysis at medium quality and 1,024-by-768 resolution; 19fps in Lost Planet 2 at medium quality at 1,024-by-768 resolution and 8fps in high quality at native resolution).

Unlike the Zenbook UX31A-RSL8's sealed-in battery, the 40Wh battery in the Series 5 is removable. Though Samsung has claimed that it provides up to 7 hours of continuous use, it lasted only 5 hours 44 minutes in MobileMark 2007. With the exception of the Series 5 Ultra (5 hours 47 minutes), all comparable systems demonstrated much more capable battery life. Both the Zenbook UX31A-RSL8 (6 hours 9 minutes) and Portege Z830 (6 hours 27 minutes) outlasted the Series 5, and the HP Folio 13 put it to shame with its 7 hours 33 minutes of battery life.

The Samsung Series 5 Ultra NP530U3B-A02 gets the job done, but its price tag is difficult to justify in the face of its unimpressive performance and more nimble competitors. Though it's since been updated with a faster, third-generation Ivy Core processor, as far as Sandy Bridge-equipped ultrabooks go, the Editors' Choice for ultrabooks, the Asus Zenbook UX31A-RSL8, is still the one to beat.

Ecstasy harms memory with one year of recreational use

ScienceDaily (July 25, 2012) ? There has been significant debate in policy circles about whether governments have over-reacted to ecstasy by issuing warnings against its use and making it illegal. In the UK, David Nutt said ecstasy was less dangerous than horseback riding, which led to him being fired as the government's chief drug advisor. Others have argued that ecstasy is dangerous if you use it a lot, but brief use is safe.

New research published online July 25 by the scientific journal Addiction, gives some of the first information available on the actual risk of using ecstasy. It shows that even in recreational amounts over a relatively short time period, ecstasy users risk specific memory impairments. Further, as the nature of the impairments may not be immediately obvious to the user, it is possible people wouldn't get the signs that they are being damaged by drug use until it is too late.

According to the study, new ecstasy users who took ten or more ecstasy pills over their first year of use showed decreased function of their immediate and short-term memory compared with their pre-ecstasy performance. These findings are associated with damage of the hippocampus, the area of the brain that oversees memory function and navigation. Interestingly, hippocampal damage is one of the first signs of Alzheimer's disease, resulting in memory loss and disorientation.

The study participants took an average of 32 pills each over the course of the year, or about two and a half pills per month. Some participants took as few as ten pills over the year and still showed signs of memory impairments.

Lead author Dr. Daniel Wagner says: "This study was designed to minimize the methodological limitations of earlier research, in which it was not possible to say whether cognitive impairments seen among ecstasy users were in place before drug use began. By measuring the cognitive function of people with no history of ecstasy use and, one year later, identifying those who had used ecstasy at least ten times and remeasuring their performance, we have been able to start isolating the precise cognitive effects of this drug."
