Dear Escalator? Latest Kim Jong-il shrine is an escalator (video)

North Koreans are mourning the death of Kim Jong-il, but the oddest sign of the cult of personality is a shrine at a supermarket escalator.

The North Korean government propaganda machine is delivering a steady diet of images of North Koreans mourning the death of Kim Jong-il

We've seen North Koreans wailing, sobbing, and quietly weeping in public plazas, schools, and factories. And, of course, there are the predictable long lines of people waiting to pay their respects at the Dear Leader's see-through coffin on display in Pyongyang.

But perhaps the most unusual expression of the North Korean cult of personality is a "shrine" at a supermarket escalator.

Yes, really.

The North Korean government media released a still photo of what is believed to have been Kim Jong-il?s last public appearance before he died on Saturday. He's riding an escalator into a new supermarket in Pyongyang. The photo is undated, but the Korean Central News Agency reported separately that Kim had visited a supermarket on Dec. 15, 2011 ? two days before his reported death.

North Korean mourners are now gathering at the escalator to pay their respects (video below).

?I can?t imagine how happy it would make us and our fellow citizens if he could ride on this escalator again,? said one North Korean woman, amid a group of mourners, weeping around the moving staircase, according to Euronews story. ?I still feel that he is alive, with his bright smile. I can also hear his voice.?

Britian's Daily Mail was so amused by the photo that they had a photo caption contest for readers.Their own headline: "Kim Jong II clearly didn't enjoy grocery shopping ..."

But The Guardian of London took a more revealing look at who else is shown in the photo riding the escalator with Kim Jong-il. The image offers a sneak preview of the coming North Korean power players.

"Standing behind him, and in front of the officials, are his son [Kim Jong-un] and two people who could determine the course of the country's leadership in these delicate, early days of transition.

The woman is Kim Kyong-hui, Kim Jong-il's younger sister and a regular companion in the last years of his life. Behind them is her husband Jang Song-thaek, the most powerful adviser in the new leadership, who is expected to guide the "young general" during his formative days in power."

Raiders: WR/KR Ford returns to practice

By Steve Corkran
Wednesday, December 28th, 2011 at 12:07 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Wide receiver/kick returner Jacoby Ford is practicing today after missing the past seven weeks with a foot sprain. Therefore, it?s logical to assume that he intends to play Sunday against the San Diego Chargers.
Ford is running routes, catching passes and doing everything else asked of the wide receivers. He last participated in a football-related activity Nov. 10, when he suffered his injury against the Chargers at the end of a long reception.
If the Raiders get back Ford, quarterback Carson Palmer will have at his disposal all six wide receivers for the first time since that Nov. 10 game.
It comes at an ideal time for the Raiders, given they are in a must-win situation. Fellow receiver Denarius Moore returned last week, and he caught four passes for 94 yards, including a 61-yard touchdown in the third quarter.
It remains uncertain whether Ford will be used on kick returns. Coach Hue Jackson might be averse to taxing Ford too much in his first game back. Ford missed the past six games.
Running back Darren McFadden, on the other hand, still isn?t healthy enough to practice, even though he suffered his midfoot sprain 66 days ago, against the Kansas City Chiefs on Oct. 23.
Jackson said he doesn?t prefer to play anyone in a game if he hasn?t practiced in the lead up to the game. That gives McFadden two more opportunities to get back on the field and show that he is ready to contribute.
At this point, that appears a long-shot.
Free safety Michael Huff is practicing today, as well. He has missed the past two games. However, he said Monday that he will play regardless how sore or banged up he is because of the ramifications of the game.
The Raiders need to win Sunday just to have a shot at making the playoffs. Even then, they would need the Denver Broncos to lose or tie against the Chiefs, or the Bengals to lose to the Baltimore Ravens and have anything happen other than a three-way tie that involves the Raiders, Bengals and Tennessee Titans.
Defensive tackles Richard Seymour and John Henderson are not at practice. Henderson is nursing a sore knee. No word on what ails Seymour, who has been a regular at practice the past several weeks.
Seymour was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week for his two blocked field-goal attempts against the Chiefs in a 16-13 overtime victory Sunday.

Meryl Streep gets glowing reviews as UK's Thatcher (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Meryl Streep looks set for an unprecedented 17th Oscar nomination after earning glowing reviews for her performance as Britain's Margaret Thatcher in the movie "The Iron Lady".

"Virtuoso", "translucent", and "compelling" were among the words used by U.S. movie critics this week to describe Streep's turn as Britain's polarizing, and only female, prime minister.

"Is there anything that Meryl Streep can't do as an actress? One can only marvel at her virtuoso performance as Britain's Margaret Thatcher," said Rolling Stone reviewer Peter Travers.

"The Iron Lady", in which Streep plays Thatcher both as a rising politician and as a confused, elderly woman looking back on her 1979-90 period in office, opens in New York and Los Angeles on Friday, and reaches British movie theaters on January 6.

Streep, 62, already has a record 16 Academy Award acting nominations. But she has won the Oscar only twice, for "Kramer vs Kramer" in 1979 and "Sophie's Choice" in 1982.

Her turn as Thatcher has put her on the short-list for Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards in January, ahead of the Oscar nominations announcement on January 26.

Time magazine's Richard Corliss called Streep's performance as Thatcher, who is now 86, "a triumph"; Leah Rozen, writing for TheWrap.com, said Streep was "astonishingly accurate in mimicking the look, voice, gait and mannerisms of her real life character."

However "The Iron Lady" itself won fewer fans, scoring a 63 percent positive rating on movie aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes.

New York Magazine's David Edelstein described the film as "shallow but satisfying, largely because of Meryl Streep and her big fake English teeth and gift for using mimicry as a means of achieving empathy."

Writing in the New York Times, A.O. Scott praised the brilliance of Streep's performance and said the movie was "likely to be the definitive screen treatment of Mrs. Thatcher, at least for a while."

But Scott added; "You are left with the impression of an old woman who can't quite remember who she used to be and of a movie that is not so sure either."

Threat to European ratings deflates a stock rally

Reports that all countries using the euro could get their credit ratings downgraded deflated a morning rally in the stock market Monday. The Dow Jones industrial average closed up 78 points, giving back much of a 167-point gain from earlier.

News reports in the afternoon said Standard & Poor's would put all nations that use the euro on "creditwatch negative," meaning there is a 50-50 chance of a downgrade in the coming months. S&P had warned of possible rating demotions for many of the countries. The inclusion on the list of Germany, Europe's strongest economy, was the biggest surprise.

After the market closed, S&P confirmed that it had placed 15 nations on notice for possible downgrades. Two countries that use the euro weren't affected: Cyprus already had that designation and Greece already has ratings low enough to suggest that it's likely to default soon anyway.

Stocks rose in the morning after the leaders of France and Germany called for a new treaty to impose greater fiscal discipline on European countries. Yields on Italian government bonds receded sharply after the new government of Mario Monti introduced sweeping austerity measures over the weekend. That suggests traders believe Italy is less likely to default.

"There's pent-up demand, and people will use any excuse to get back in, thinking there's been too much pessimism," said Brian Gendreau, investment strategist with Cetera Financial Group. Despite strong signals about the U.S. economy, the market has been weighed down by negative headlines about the U.S. budget impasse, credit-rating downgrades of the U.S. and other nations, and Europe's spreading crisis, Gendreau said.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 78.41 points, or 0.7 percent, to 12,097.83.

The gains were broad. All 10 industry groups in the Standard & Poor's 500 index rose. Financials stocks were among the biggest winners. Investors have feared that U.S. banks might be dragged down by their close connections to the unstable European financial system.

JPMorgan Chase & Co. jumped 3.7 percent, the most in the Dow. Bank of America was the second-biggest gainer, 2.7 percent. Citigroup Inc. rose 5.9 percent, Morgan Stanley 6.8 percent.

The S&P 500 rose 12.8, or 1 percent, to 1,257.1. The Nasdaq rose 28.83, or 1.1 percent, to 2,655.76.

Investors are hoping that a summit of European leaders on Thursday and Friday will produce concrete measures to prevent a messy breakup of the euro currency, which is shared by 17 nations. Markets have been jittery because of fears that the euro might disintegrate, causing a sharp recession in Europe that would spread through the world economy.

The main Italian stock index jumped 2.9 percent as Italian bond yields dropped to their lowest level in a month. The yield on the 10-year Italian bond plunged half a percentage point to 5.93 percent. It rose above 7 percent last month, a level at which other nations were forced to take bailouts. By comparison, bond yields in Germany, Europe's largest and most stable economy, are roughly 2 percent.

Analysts say bailing out Italy would be too costly and would hurt the credit standing of German and France, which have the strongest economies in the euro group.

Monday's gains follow the best week in more than two years for U.S. stock indexes. The S&P 500 rose 7.4 percent last week, the most since March 2009. The Dow jumped 7 percent, the most since July 2009.

In corporate news:

? Gannett Co. leapt 10.2 percent after the media company was upgraded to "buy" from "neutral" by analysts at Lazard Capital Markets.

? Incyte Corp. fell 2 percent after a Citigroup analyst downgraded the drug maker to "neutral" from "buy," saying its new blood-disease drug Jakafi might not work as a long-term treatment.

? SuccessFactors Inc. soared more than 50 percent after the company agreed to be sold to German software company SAP for $3.4 billion. SuccessFactors makes software specializing in human resources tasks. The deal is part of SAP's plan to compete with software rival Oracle Corp.

Verizon apps crash the Galaxy Nexus party, are quickly shown the door

The 4G-flavored Galaxy Nexus has been spotted by the gadget paparazzi yet again. This time, attention was focused on what the Verizon branding will add in the way of obligatory software detritus. Fortunately, these photos prove that the ICS-minted phone should be able to shrug off most of these annoyances. In the shot above, the Verizon Backup Assistant app's disable button is all lit up, beckoning to be forever removed from your visible app list. Check out a full gallery of the Big Red bloat at the source below.

Obama on AIDS: 'We can beat this disease'

(AP) ? President Barack Obama set an ambitious goal Thursday for significantly increasing access to life-saving AIDS drugs for people in the U.S. and around the world, as he announced a renewed American commitment to ending a pandemic that has killed 30 million people.

"We can beat this disease," Obama declared during a World AIDS Day event in Washington. Former Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton also participated via satellite.

Obama pledged U.S. support to help 6 million people in countries hardest hit by the virus get access to antiretroviral drugs by the end of 2013, increasing the original U.S. goal by 2 million. And he announced plans to boost spending on HIV treatment in the U.S. by $50 million.

"The rate of new infections may be going down elsewhere, but it's not going down here in America," he said. "There are communities in this country being devastated still by this disease. When new infections among young, black, gay men increase by nearly 50 percent in three years, we need to do more to show them that their lives matter."

As part of Obama's new overseas initiatives, the U.S. will also aim to get antiretroviral drugs to 1.5 million HIV-positive pregnant women to prevent them from passing the virus to their children; distribute more than 1 billion condoms in the developing world in the next two years; and fund 4.7 million voluntary medical male circumcisions in eastern and southern Africa over the next two years. Research shows circumcisions reduce the risk of female-to-male HIV transmission by more than 60 percent.

The new global goals build on the work of the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, which focuses on prevention, treatment and support programs in 15 countries hit hardest by the AIDS pandemic, 12 of them in Africa. Bush launched the $15 billion plan in 2003, and in 2008, Congress tripled the budget to $48 billion over five years.

Obama praised Bush for his leadership on AIDS relief, saying the program will be one of the former president's greatest legacies.

"That program ? more ambitious than even leading advocates thought was possible at the time ? has saved thousands and thousands and thousands of lives, spurred international action, and laid the foundation for a comprehensive global plan that will impact the lives of millions," Obama said. "And we are proud that we have the opportunity to carry that work forward."

Despite Obama's more ambitious goals, the relief program's budget is not expected to increase. Instead officials said the expanded targets would be funded through savings achieved by making the program more efficient and cutting the costs of treatment.

The president urged other wealthy nations to fulfill their financial pledges to a global fund to fight HIV and AIDS, and jabbed those who have not contributed money.

"Countries that haven't made a pledge need to do so," he said. "That includes China and other major economies that are now able to step up as major donors."

The HIV virus has infected an estimated 60 million people worldwide since the deadly pandemic began 30 years ago. More than 33 million people are currently living with the virus.

While the failure to find an effective HIV vaccine continues to frustrate the medical community, experts say scientific research in recent years has led to substantial progress in preventing and treating the virus.

Obama ordered his staff to reevaluate both their international and domestic approaches to HIV and AIDS this summer after being briefed on the scientific advancements.

Members of both parties praised the new initiatives and commended Democratic and Republican leaders for coming together.

"Here's what we can do when we work together. We've got leaders of both political parties standing behind something that works," said Gayle Smith, Obama's senior director for development and democracy at the National Security Council.

Tony Fratto, a former Bush spokesman, urged both parties to avoid making the fight against AIDS a political issue.

"The only way to undermine this historic undertaking is if it becomes a partisan issue," he said. "The reasons a Barack Obama and a George W. Bush can support America's leading role in addressing this disease may be very different, but what's important is they've sought the same goal."

"Twilight" film surpasses $500 million worldwide (Reuters)

(Reuters) - "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn ? Part 1" broke the $500 million mark at worldwide box offices on Monday after its release only 12 days ago, film distributor Summit Entertainment said on Tuesday.

"Breaking Dawn", the fourth installment in the vampire romance franchise based on the "Twilight" novels by Stephanie Meyer, generated has generated $508 million worldwide, of which $223 million came from U.S. box offices, after record ticket sales over the U.S. Thanksgiving weekend.

"We couldn't be more pleased with the success of this film and a franchise that the fans have continued to support over the past several years," Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger, co-chairmen of Summit Entertainment, said in a statement.

The success of "Breaking Dawn - Part 1" comes after the first three films in the "Twilight Saga" series collectively earned more than $1.8 billion at the worldwide box offices.

Starring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner, the fourth film sees young lovers Bella Swan and vampire Edward Cullen finally unite in marriage and embark on their highly anticipated honeymoon, before their wedded bliss is cut short by an unexpected life-threatening pregnancy.

The second part of the film, which will be the conclusion of the "Twilight Saga," is due for release in 2012.

Barcelona's 27-game run ends

Angel Di Maria

updated 6:17 p.m. ET Nov. 26, 2011

MADRID - Getafe ended Barcelona's 27-game unbeaten streak, shocking the Spanish champions 1-0 as Juan Valera scored in the 67th minute with a header off a corner kick.

Real Madrid opened a six-point lead, coming from behind to beat Atletico Madrid 4-1 as Cristiano Ronaldo converted a pair of penalty kicks and Angel Di Maria and Gonzalo Higuain scored one goal apiece. Real has won nine straight league games and maintained a 12-year unbeaten run in the Spanish-capital derby.

Barcelona had not lost since April 30, starting this season unbeaten in 21 matches, and the overall unbeaten streak was one shy of the club record set from September to January last season. Barcelona's Lionel Messi had a goal disallowed for offside in second-half injury time, then hit a post just before the final whistle.
