CNN Hit 20-Year Primetime Ratings Low In May
The bad news just keeps coming for CNN.
May was the network's worst month for total viewers during primetime in over 20 years. CNN drew an average of just 389,000 primetime viewers from April 30 to May 27. In comparison, MSNBC drew an average of 674,000 total viewers, while Fox News boasted an average of 1,692,000 total viewers.
It was also the network's second-worst month in primetime for viewers in the key demographic since October 1991.
Things were especially bad at the 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. timeslots. Piers Morgan drew an average of 417,000 total viewers and 117,000 viewers age 25-54 ? the lowest numbers the 9 p.m. slot has seen in two decades. Erin Burnett received just 89,000 viewers in the key demo at 7 p.m.
The news is the latest development in CNN's worsening ratings struggle. The network had its lowest-rated month in over a decade in April. That prompted management to issue stern warnings about improving numbers. However, the recent dismal results are not surprising, given that the network hit a 20-year primetime low during the week of May 14.

Dallas crane standoff ends as man falls to ground

DALLAS -- The standoff between Dallas police and a man that climbed to the top of a construction crane on the campus of Southern Methodist University ended early Tuesday morning, when the man fell to his death.
At about 1 a.m. Dallas police used bright lights, loud directional sirens and the police helicopter to distract the man, while four SWAT?officers climbed the crane to storm the cab believed to be 100 to 150 feet above the ground.
Police say the man sprayed a WD-40-like substance at officers as they entered the cab. He then climbed out the smashed windshield of the cab.
"He retreated to a position in the crane where he had one leg in a window and one leg outside the window, from there he went over the edge, and clung to the edge for a moment before he fell to his death," said Dallas Deputy Chief Randy Blankenbaker.
The man fell just before 2 a.m. Tuesday morning, ending a roughly 14-hour standoff.
"We at SMU are relieved this situation has been resolved and the campus is secure. We all regret the loss of life," said SMU?spokesman Brad Cheves.

Throughout the day, the suspect dropped items from the crane cab, including his shirt and shoes, some cans, a fire extinguisher, and other items that may have been inside the cab.

Sources tell NBC?5 the man may have become ill during the standoff and vomited, perhaps due to the heat.
As night fell, Dallas police used a spotlight to shine light into the crane. Police also used noise machines to keep the man awake and talking.
Man Is Suspect in Armed Robbery
Police did confirmed Tuesday the man is the suspect connected to an overnight robbery about 2:30 a.m. Monday and that police dogs tracked the man's scent to the construction site.
David Cantu said he was putting sound and lighting equipment into the truck outside the Adolphus Hotel when a man jumped in and tried to stab him with something sharp, possibly a nail.
"I said, What are you doing?'" Cantu said. "He swung his arm at me with a sharp object and for the most part, I just backed off and let him do his thing."
Cantu said the man sped away, hitting several cars parked along Main Street.
"You hear a big bang multiple times,"?he said. "He's hitting multiple cars at that point."
The stolen?truck was later found not far from the crane, according to police.
Chris Ghanbari, a freelance photographer who lives in a building overlooking the scene, got out his video camera and started rolling.
"I just started shooting a minute -- a minute-and-a-half -- of video of the crime scene," Ghanbari said. "About 30 minutes later, we had 10 to 15 police cars out there."

Family history - US Vital Records
In early April, Chicagoan Mazurka Wojciechowska went online and found information she hadn?t known about her family.
Just days earlier, the federal government had posted 3.8 million images of previously unreleased documents from the 1940 U.S. census, and Wojciechowska was one of millions who went to computers to get a glimpse of the past.
What she discovered were details about seven ancestors ? including her mother ? who were living at her great-grandfather?s home in the 2000 block of West Bradley Place in Chicago.
?I gave myself a pat on the back; I found them right away,? said Wojciechowska, 55, a folk musician. ?I learned that my great-grandfather was an engineer, and his son was an architect. It?s truly fascinating that family history can be found on the Internet.?
Anyone with an Internet connection can now find out what grandma and grandpa ? and anyone else who was around ? were doing in 1940. Officials at the National Archives posted the census documents April 2 at 1940census.archives.gov, and as of last week, there had been more than 1.5 billion hits.
Searching the 1940 census not only can get people in touch with their roots ? genealogists say the census also provides a history lesson and a snapshot of a generation that was coming out of the Great Depression and on the brink of America?s entry into World War II.
Knowing your family history ?can help put your own life in perspective,? said Ginger Frere, a genealogist and reference librarian at the Newberry Library in Chicago. ?Census records are a good place to start.?
Though some census data, like city populations, are released within months of being compiled, personal information, under federal privacy laws, cannot be released for 72 years.
The recently released records were the first census documents to be posted on the National Archives website, according to government officials. Documents from other censuses can only be reviewed on private genealogy websites or in person at a National Archives center.
A drawback to the 1940 census data is that currently a person can only be found by his or her 1940 home address or special census district number. National Archives officials said the census database will be indexed by names in about seven months.
To prepare for the release, National Archives officials spent three years digitizing microfilm census records and checking every scanned census document. The documents, which were filled out by hand by census takers, include such information as gender, race, occupation, schooling, salary, home value, rental information and participation in government-sponsored work programs of the era.
There is also supplementary information supplied by randomly selected individuals, such as native language, more in-depth employment data and military service record.
Constance Potter, reference archivist with the National Archives, said access to the 1940 census fills an important void for genealogists and people doing research on their ancestors. It has been 10 years since 1930 census data were released for public review.
Frere said the online publication of the 1940 census has spurred interest in genealogy.
?People have been waiting for the (1940) census to come out for a long time,? said Frere. ?Genealogy in general has become more mainstream and accessible thanks to the Internet.?
Genealogist Craig Pfannkuche, corresponding secretary of the Chicago Genealogy Society who teaches genealogy classes throughout the Chicago area, has a warning for people delving into genealogy.
?Family members lie,? said Pfannkuche, laughing. ?People often find out things they don?t want to know, but once you start looking, it can become addicting.?
While researching his own family, Pfannkuche found out that an ancestor thought to be the family hero was actually a family villain. While doing research for other people, he has uncovered previously unknown siblings, divorces and even secret marriages.
For general genealogy searching, Pfannkuche recommends using Heritage Quest Online, which can often be accessed for free by logging on with your library card to your local library website. He said other databases, such as Ancestry.com, are only free if accessed at a library.
Heritage Quest, which can be searched using an ancestor?s name, contains U.S. census records from 1790 to 1930, along with 28,000 family and local history books, including some early military records.

A consolidated customer email list can be easily used to market new products to existing customers or to get repeat orders if done regularly and consistently. Existing customers have seen your product and service before, and are more likely to buy from you again.
2. No specific target ? One big, long message for everyone is no longer smart or effective. Nothing works the fast way. Now the trend is to do personalized, 1 to 1 marketing. If your standard message is for all prospects in all industries, chances are that it does not address anyone needs.

A systematic measurement system is very important. With emails, you can tag each and every link, email account and email sent, so that when it is opened or clicked, you can immediately know who is interested, who is keen to buy, what product, and how eagerly.
With a good measurement, you can call those few that spent time with your message, or on your website, and by knowing their browsing behaviour, you can customise future messages for them. Market something that they have shown interest on, and you are closer to another sale.

Close Mubarak aide is jailed for corruption
CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's official news agency says a criminal court has convicted one of Hosni Mubarak's closest aides of corruption and jailed him for seven years.
Sunday's ruling also fined Zakaria Azmi 36.3 million pounds ($6 million).
Azmi was Mubarak's chief of staff and the former president was rarely seen in public without him standing by his side.
The verdict comes a week before Mubarak himself is due to be sentenced after a trial in which he faced charges of complicity in the killing of protesters during the popular uprising that toppled his regime last year.
Mubarak also faced corruption charges.
The official Middle East News Agency said the court established that Azmi had used his position to make illicit gains of 42.6 million pounds ($7 million).

Why India Should Deregulate And Hike Diesel Prices
Fearing a political backlash, the Indian government has postponed the decision to hike the diesel prices for the time being. However, economists feel that it is time the government deregulated the prices of diesel and stopped subsidizing them.
In India, diesel price is highly subsidized and is nearly 40 percent less than petrol price. After the recent price hike, petrol now costs Rs 78.57 per litre in Mumbai while diesel is priced just Rs 45.99 per litre in the city.
Unlike petrol, which is regarded as a rich man's fuel, diesel has the "common man's fuel" tag. The agrarian rural India depends on diesel and kerosene for its farming purposes, and freight charges are also depended on diesel. These make a hike in diesel prices a political issue in the country and successive governments have kept the diesel prices low by subsidizing them. Therefore, the government still regulates the diesel prices while petrol prices were deregulated two years ago.
Economists feel that it is high time the government woke up to the reality that diesel price subsidies are helping the rich rather than the poor farmers. "The sooner the government bites the bullet, the better," Business Today quoted Sunil Sinha, director, Research, at ratings agency CRISIL.
Economists cite several reasons for deregulating both the diesel and kerosene.

- It is argued that diesel hike will affect the agriculture sector. But analysts say it is wrong because dependence on diesel and kerosene for agricultural purposes has reduced over a time. This dependence can be further reduced if the amount of money the government spends on fuel subsidy is spent on improving the energy and power supply to rural areas.
- Freight charge is another criterion for the government to keep the diesel prices reduced. However, experts feel that the government should work out a differential system of tariffs for public sector freight carriages.
- The wide gap between the petrol and diesel prices is unscientific, as the higher petrol prices will lead to the rise in diesel car sales. High-priced diesel cars, especially the SUVs, get benefits from the cheap diesel and their rich owners will pocket the subsidies meant for the poor farmers. "It is unacceptable that government should continue to incur huge revenue losses. With each litre of petrol replaced by diesel to run a car, excise earnings drop seven times. These losses will increase with the growing share of diesel cars and SUVs. The effect is so dramatic that the excise earnings from both diesel and petrol are now nearly equal," said Anumita Roychowdhury, head of CSE's air pollution team.
- Apart from this the, the Central government is estimated to have lost close to Rs 8 billion in fuel excise duties, just from the diesel used by the new diesel cars sold in 2010-11.
- Moreover, economists point out that subsidies in present form really don't benefit the deserved, or the government, because any kind of loss suffered by the state-run oil companies, due to subsidies, are borne by the government itself. The current difference between the actual price of diesel and what the consumers pay for it is around 12-14 rupees per litre and this comes to billions of rupees a year. With an expected surge in diesel car market, this amount is set to increase.
- The situation can worsen the Indian economy, which is going through a rough patch as the rising current account and fiscal deficit, policy paralysis, and depreciation of the rupee have affected the country's growth rate. India's Index of Industrial Production (IIP) averaged 2.8 percent in 2011/12, compared to 8.2 percent in 2010/11. The current account deficit stands at $19.6 billion in the October-December 2011 quarter, compared to the $10.1 billion a year earlier. Any government inaction on economic front will balloon the crisis further.
- Another matter of concern is the environment, because the petrol price hike and the increased diesel car sales will lead to a rise in pollution and traffic congestion considerably. According to the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) data, 50 percent of the total new car sales in India comprise of diesel cars and in the popular compact car segment, diesel cars form 70-75 percent of all car sales. "Government is ignoring the severe public health impacts of dieselization in Indian cities; the energy impacts of the steady shift towards bigger diesel cars and SUVs; and crippling revenue losses on account of subsidy of rich car owners," the CSE said. Pointing to the dangers of high dieselization on people's health, the CSE said, "The current emissions standards in India legally allow diesel cars to emit more particulate matter and nitrogen oxides. India?is dieselizing without clean diesel (diesel with 10-ppm sulphur diesel and advanced emissions control systems)."
Analysts and trade bodies feel that economy needs a boost now to instill confidence in investors. Deregulating, and ending diesel subsidies will be the best step towards it.
They say the government should implement differential rates for the diesel SUVs and the farming sector to start with.
"As for the pricing, the full market price should be charged for diesel used for moving large cars and luxury buses, while the increase should be very moderate for others to begin with," Assocham (Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India) secretary general D S Rawat was quoted as saying by Business Today.
The economists also feel that the government's current strategy of cutting the taxes will be counterproductive as by resorting to such measures, the government will be losing considerable revenue, which could be spent on infrastructure and development.
"If government gives up a major source of revenue like this, it could only do so at the expense of either cutting sharply its development expenditure or?raising the level of deficit financing. Either way it would be counterproductive for a government committed to raising the growth rate and also making this growth inclusive," Assocham said.
However, the government should be cautious in taking the step as it has to deal with the rising inflation. "It will not be an easy decision. Increasing the price would mean a further spike in inflation. There is a direct conflict between controlling inflation and increasing the price of diesel that cascades into inflation,"," Ajit Ranade, chief economist at the Aditya Birla Group, was quoted as saying by Business Today.

The IRS has launched a new online tool, Exempt Organizations (EO) Select Check, which makes it easier for charitable donors to research tax-exempt organizations.
Now you can go to one location (www.irs.gov/charities/article/0,,id=249767,00.html), select a tax-exempt organization and check to see if it?s eligible to receive tax-deductible charitable contributions. Users may rely on this list in determining charitable donation deductions. Similarly, you can find out if an organization?s tax-exempt status has been revoked for failing to file a Form 990-series return or notice for three consecutive years.

Six race groups ? including a vintage collection of cars ? will be competing on Pacific Raceways' historic 2.25-mile road course.
Practice and qualifying is Saturday and Sunday morning with the first round of group racing Sunday afternoon followed by another round Monday afternoon.
General admission tickets, which can be purchased at the gate, are $10 per day or $25 for a three-day pass.
Gates open at 7:30 a.m. with on-track action starting at 9 a.m. each day.
The SCCA is the largest road course racing organization in the U.S. and includes nine divisions throughout the country. The organization dates back to 1944.
Pacific Raceways' challenging nine-turn road course has hosted top flight road racing events since the early 1960s. Indy 500 legend Mario Andretti, who scored his only Brickyard win in 1969, also won a USAC-sponsored event at the Kent track the same year propelling him to the national championship.

Report: Bobcats to interview Ewing for head coach position
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Two people familiar with the situation say the Bobcats will interview Orlando assistant Patrick Ewing on Thursday in Charlotte for their vacant head coaching position.
The people say Charlotte will interview Memphis assistant Dave Joerger on Friday. The people spoke to The Associated Press Wednesday on condition of anonymity because the team hasn't publicly announced its list of candidates.
Bobcats owner Michael Jordan is friends with Ewing, but is not expected to sit in on the interview. General manager Rich Cho and president of basketball operations Rod Higgins have handled interviews so far.

ToonariPost (TP): How and when did you first start practicing your art (are you traditionally trained or self-taught)?
Jenny Lehmann (JL): I was always doing sketches and scribbles, even when I was a little child, but I started drawing and painting seriously at the age of 19, when I discovered the beauty of digital painting. I am completely self-taught, as most of the other artists I know. I guess it is more a calling to be artistically minded, so most artists teach themselves, because they don?t need a teacher!
TP: What mediums do you use for your art work? ?Which is your favorite and why?
JL: I?m a completely digital artist by now. The most important working tools for a digital artist are the tablet (I?m using a Wacom Intuos 3) and his/her painting programs; I use programs such as Adobe Photoshop CS2, SAI Paint Tool and Corel Painter for my artwork, usually working with all of them in parallel, because they all have their specific advantages.
TP: What piece of your work is your favorite and why?
JL: I don?t have a favorite artwork because, to be honest, for me the result is not the most important thing about doing art. It?s more or less the complete painting process. I?m happy while I?m painting, not when the artwork is finished. I do have lots of fragrant memories of little things that happened during a painting process, such as a wonderful stone structure I made or doing a really wonderful face. I don?t think I have one favorite artwork because all of them contain lots of little things that are more important for me than the whole painting itself!
TP: When you first started did you ever hit any bumps in your art process. How did you overcome them?
JL: For being a good painter I think you need to be patient and full of eagerness. If there are any bricks or obstacles you need to find a way to get around it. I personally take my time to create artwork. If there?s anything about a painting I don?t like, I will wait for a few days and then go over it again, until it is what I expected it to be. The biggest problem I still have is my anime influence; I still have lots of problems with real proportions and faces. I used to draw manga and anime a lot when I was younger but I personally don?t like the style anymore; it does not fit to my recent understanding of art.
All in all, I?d say most of the problems you might have you can solve when you practice a lot and think about what you are doing very carefully. I have seen many ? especially young ? artists who didn?t think about what they actually wanted to draw or paint like and this caused them to become disoriented. I think a really good painter has to know about the direction he/ she wants to go for.
TP: Who or what are your inspirations and why?
JL: I have lots of inspirations, such as other artists I admire. I personally really like Marta Dahlig, she was one of the first digital artists I ever saw and I fell in love with her art. I also like Melanie Delon and a newcomer called Jennifer Healy, but there are many other artists I really like, too, and watching them helps me to improve myself, of course! But the greatest inspiration I have is the world around me! There are so many things outside that are worth having a look at and all of it inspires me to work harder, to learn more and to become better and even more dedicated!
TP: What artists would you consider working with to do a piece and why? What type of work do you think would come from this partnership?
JL: I?m doing lots of collaborations with other artists already, and I love it! The wonderful thing about working together on one piece is that you can learn from each other, you get new expressions and a different view on your own work! The result is usually a really good artwork ?containing only the positive things of both artists.
At the moment I?m doing a collaboration with the really talented Ulyana Regener and I have learn a lot of new things already because the way she works is completely different! Of course, I?d also love to do a piece with one of my other favorite artists, maybe with Jennifer Healy!
TP: What are your goals in life? ?Do you plan to continue art as a hobby or make it a career?
JL: To be honest I don?t know yet! I?d personally prefer to stay a hobby artist because if painting becomes your profession there might be a risk that you won?t have much fun doing it anymore, but otherwise I?d like to improve myself and to earn money with my talent. The first thing I will do is to finish University, and then? Well, we?ll see what future brings!
TP: You said that you would like to finish university and that you art would be better as a hobby. What are you currently studying at your university and why did you choose that field?
JL: I?m currently studying M+I in Offenburg, that?s a mix of Media Technologies and IT combined with Film Design and business administration. This is quite different from my hobby, but I didn?t want to study arts because I prefer people being down-to-earth, which is not a typical trait of artists, in general, and one of the main reasons why I still have problems calling myself an artist; I?d prefer to be called a painter or an artisan.
I really enjoy my studies, because it is very eclectic and I like to know about the technical aspects of the tools I?m working with in my free time.
TP: Do you feel that your culture has influenced you in some way that makes you different than other artists?
JL: Everything has influenced me, that is what makes every artist different from the each other. We all have our personal, special style, our individual mind and of course our culture, our social lives, and our experiences that make us unique! If people want to understand why I?m unique, they just have to look at my work and they will understand. I don?t think I need to explain this feeling, because it?s not necessary!

With its 50-lumen rating, the LCOS-based AAXA P3 ($270 street) isn't the brightest pico projector available. The ?Optoma Pico PK320 Pocket Projector ($450 street, 3 stars), for one, claims 100 lumens. However, the P3 is bright for the price, and it offers any number of additional features that you might not expect at such a low cost, starting with an HDMI port and the ability to read files from a USB memory key. The combination makes it well worth considering.
One complicating factor is the 1,024 by 600 native resolution. This is better resolution than you'll find in most pico projectors, and generally counts as a plus. Both the PK320 and the Editors' Choice Optoma PK301 Pico Pocket Projector ($400 street, 4 stars), for example, offer WVGA (854 by 480). On the negative side, however, 1024 by 600 is unusual enough that most computers don't support it. Data image quality at 600 by 800 resolution was better than most pico projectors, with the P3 scoring relatively well on our standard suite of DisplayMate tests. Color balance was good, with suitably neutral grays over the entire range from black to white; colors were nicely saturated; and I saw only the slightest pixel jitter with an analog connection on screens that are designed to bring out jitter. Text was easy to read at sizes as small as 9 points.
Video quality was also good for a pico projector, with the P3 doing a reasonably good job in my tests of retaining shadow detail (details based on shading in dark areas) and resisting posterization (shading changing suddenly where it should change gradually.)
Also very much on the plus side is that the P3 shows far fewer rainbow artifacts?with bright areas breaking up into little red-green-blue rainbows?than most pico projectors. Even if you're sensitive to the effect, as I am, it's not likely that you'll see the artifacts often enough with either data or video images to find them annoying.
Other Issues
As is standard for pico projectors, the P3 uses LEDs for its light source. More important, the LEDs are meant to last the life of the projector, with a rated 15,000 hour lifetime, so you won't have to spend money on replacement lamps. As is also standard, the 1-watt speakers are hardly worth having. If you need sound, however, the audio out port lets you plug in a headset or external powered speaker.
It would be easier to give the P3 an enthusiastic recommendation if it offered a native resolution that was more widely supported. But even if you ignore the widescreen capability and treat it as astandard SVGA projector, there's still a lot to like. Its balance of small size, low weight, reasonable battery life, and good data and video image quality adds up to a strong argument for the P3. Noisy kid punched in theater: Parents, what were you thinking?
Disruptive kids in theaters are nothing new, but a recent violent incident highlights what steps parents and theater managers should take to make sure unsupervised kids follow basic movie-going etiquette.

There have been other incidents in the past few years of movie theater disturbances turning violent, usually involving teenagers, which have raised concerns about who is responsible for preventing these incidents.
On its website, the National Association of Theatre Owners give several strategies for theater management to curb disruptive behavior during movies. Some theaters prohibit unaccompanied teenagers and children from attending late-night movies. Others are using new technology to monitor the auditorium, allowing staff to respond quicker to incidents.
Lowery said that the theater in Kent, part of the national AMC chain, trains its staff in how to deal with disruptive patrons. ?Ninety-five percent of the time, the staff can handle disturbances without police involvement,? he said.
Another common disturbance in movie theaters is cell phone usage. Anyone who has been been to the movies recently has probably seen the ?entertaining policy trailers? telling patrons not to talk or use their cell phones during the movie. ?According to NATO, one suggestion to prevent cell phone usage in theaters is to install signal-jamming devices. These ?jammers? became legal in France in 2004, but the U.S. Communications Act of 1934 prohibits the use of cell phone ?jamming? or using a device to block cell phone, Wi-Fi or GPS signals, according to the Federal Communications Commission.
