On July 9, 1955, today on Baseball Almanac, Arch Ward - creator of the Major League Baseball All-Star Game, the All-America Football Conference and the College All-Star Game - passed away. A very brief history: Chicago was hosting the Century of Progress World's Fair in 1933 and Chicago Mayor Ed Kelly wanted something special. Chicago Tribune Publisher Colonel Bertie McCormick (a friend of the Mayor's who was asked for help) introduced the Mayor to his sports editor, Arch Ward, who came up with the Dream Game - have the best players in the the National League play the best players in the American League. Readers of the Chicago Tribune would pick the players and a coin-toss would send the one-time event to either Comiskey or Cubs Park. The readers from 56 newspapers ended up picking the players, the event lasted a bit longer than one-year, and the Midsummer Classic was born courtesy of the "Cecil B. DeMille of Sports".
